POETIC DICTIONARY OF AHMED RESMÎ NAMED NAZM-I GİRİDÎ

Abstract
Poetic dictionary tradition started in XI. century in Arabic Literature and the first works in the field were created in XV. century. Various works of art in the branch of poetic dictionary tradition were created in the following years. There are many different kinds of dictionaries varying from the ones prepared for students in ottoman elementary-primary schools, dictionaries for moslem theological schools (madrasa) and the ones that are prepared in order to explain a dictionary or a piece of art. Besides bilingual dictionaries such as Arabic-Turkish or Arabic-Persian, there are trilingual poetic dictionaries such as Arabic-Persian-Turkish. These dictionaries have different sizes but they were written in a specific composition. Poetic dictionaries had a significant function in education process as verse was used and appreciated a lot. There have been many studies in recent years about poetic dictionaries. In this article, the text named Nazm-ı Giridî, written by Ahmed Resmî (dth. 1778) in 1740 is presented and analysis of the text is carried out. At the beginning of the article, brief information about different poetic dictionary examples is given. Nazm-ı Giridî is a trilingual poetic dictionary including Arabic-Persian-Turkish languages. Ahmed Resmî is known as a significant and talented prosaist and he has works in the field of biography; but in the resources about him, Nazm-ı Giridî isn’t mentioned. The only copy of dictionary is registered in ‘Âşir Efendi Collection number 381’ in Süleymaniye Library. Nazm-ı Giridî is written for Âşir Efendi, the son of Reîsülküttâb Mustafa Efendi. Introduction of the work of art is made of 35 mesnevi verses and there are a total of 203 verses in the work. There are 14 stanzas varying from 7 to 19. 365 Turkish, 447 Persian and 752 Arabic strains (including repetitions) are used in the work. There are 8 different prosodies in the work.
