Political Elites and the City: The urban network of GoiÃ¡s in the areas of Portuguese America

Abstract

In this article we propose to analyse the mechanisms used for the political elites of Vila Boa, which hadthe intent to expand their powers within the city. Considering this objective, the strategy of the municipal officers includes some special mechanisms of pressure on the economies of other urban cores, spread on the territory of GoiÃ¡s during the 18th century. Around this configuration, it is necessary to broaden our field of observation to understand the events and relationships woven into the political field of GoiÃ¡s. In fact, a real urban network opened with all virtual possibilities of economic domination, in addition to other activities that were acting as attractive elements for local political groups. In other words, the political elites of Vila Boa de GoiÃ¡s retained control of a decisive influence centre based on a model of local organisation authorities adopted in the areas of the Portuguese America.
