POLLINATION ECOLOGY OF RHYNCHOSIA HEYNEI WIGHT & ARN. (FABACEAE), AN ENDEMIC MEDICINAL HERBACEOUS SHRUB SPECIES OF PENINSULAR INDIA

Journal Title: Romanian Journal of Biology - Plant Biology - Year 2018, Vol 63, Issue 1

Abstract

Rhynchosia heynei is an endemic medicinal herbaceous shrub in dry deciduous forests of peninsular India. It flowers during September-January with peak flowering during November in the Nallamalai forest of Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh. The flowers are hermaphroditic, nectariferous, self-compatible and have an explosive pollination mechanism adapted for pollination by bees. They fruit through manipulated selfing, geitonogamy and xenogamy mediated by pollen vectoring bees. The flowers not visited by bees fall off while those visited and pollinated by them set fruit. Seed dispersal occurs by explosive pod dehiscence. Perennial root stock produces new foliage during rainy season. Seeds also germinate at the same time but their continued growth is subject to the availability of soil moisture and nutrient content. The plant produces the highest seed set and has the ability to self-populate in dry deciduous regions, but it is not widespread because the habitats where it grows are rocky, dry and experience water stress and nutrient deficiency which is further amplified by the simultaneous luxurious growth of local grasses and certain seasonal herbaceous flora.
