POSSIBILITIES OF DIFFERENTIATION BETWEEN THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME  AND CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME WITH A DIAGNOSTIC STANDARDIZED PROTOCOL  OF SOFT TISSUES THERAPY

Abstract

Introduction Paresthesias of the upper extremities are commonly occurring phenomena, being consequences mainly to the sedentary lifestyle and because of relatively low standard of physical activity. Nerves entrapment syndromes are possible cause of symptoms of pain and tingling in hands areas. The paper discusses two examples of them, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) leading to paresthesias. Aim Due to the similarity of symptoms, this study examined the possibility of differen- tiating these diseases based on the application of diagnostic protocol of soft tissue therapy in the neck area. Materials and methods Three patients took part in the study, two women and one man (aged from to 37 to 70 years) who had shown symptoms of hands tingling. They had performed inter- view and selected clinical trials, specific to the particular disorder. Then, each person has undergone profound relaxation of soft tissue and trigger point therapy in the supraclavicular region. Results This therapeutic procedure resulted in positive effects in all patients, in one of women symptoms completely disappeared, in the second relief was related to one of the upper extremity (with existence of symptoms in both hands before therapy), while in a man there was found the decrease of numbness and a general improvement in motor function of hand. Conclusion The use of diagnostic and therapy may make possible the differentiation of car- pal tunnel syndrome and thoracic outlet syndrome.
