PRAY, SAY MY NAME: ANTHROPONYMS, DIRECT ADDRESS, AND GESTALT ANALYSIS
Journal Title: Записки з ономастики - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 18
Abstract
The presented article looks at the problem of anthroponyms operating in the grammatical function of direct address in English. The novelty of this research consists in highlighting the phenomenon under study through the prism of Gestalt theory. The paper is focused upon the communicative role of the English anthroponyms in dialogical space of the contemporary original English novel. The urgency of the investigation undertaken is motivated by the growing interest in studying direct address as an instrument of possible mental suggestion and alsî follows from the general orientation of modern linguistics towards disclosing deep links existing between mental structures in human mind and their objectivisation on the levels of language and speech. The objective of the given investigation consists in determining the grammatical status of anthroponyms used by virtual communicants in their speech intercourse for nominating each other, and in establishing the vector shift of the Gestalt centre of the direct address in different projections of vision. The author argues that in the process of their social interaction the communicants become components of a certain anthropocentric activity, and makes conclusions as to the conceptual nature of the prototypic English direct address as linguistic phenomenon. The obtained results of the research testify to a prominent future of applying Gestalt analysis to linguistic investigations and show the prospects of the paper as analyzing other language and speech phenomena through the prism of Gestalt theory.
