Journal Title: National Journal of Research in Community Medicine - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 3
Abstract
BACKGROUND: The Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic has posed major, almost insurmountable, challenges to tuberculosis (TB) control efforts across the world. The current study was undertaken to find out the socio demographic correlates of TB and HIV co-infected cases. OBJECTIVES: 1.To study the Prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis (HIV/TB co-infection) among HIV seropositive patients attending the antiretroviral therapy clinic (ART) clinic of DSR Hospital, Nellore .2.To describe the socio-demographic profile of HIV seropositive patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: It is a cross sectional, record based study conducted at the ART clinic of DSR Hospital, Nellore. All the HIV seropositive patients, who attended ART clinic from October 2016 to December 2016, receiving ART treatment during the study period, were included in the study. Data is entered in MS Excel and statistical analysis is done using SPSS software (Version 17.0). RESULTS: In this study, out of the total 304 HIV seropositive patients, who attended the ART clinic and received treatment, 41 (14%) had HIV/TB co-infection and remaining 263 (86%) were HIV seropositive alone i.e, prevalence of HIV-TB co infection in this study was found to be 14% (n = 304), of which 63.4% were males and 36.6% were females. CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATIONS: The study showed that 14% of HIV seropositives had tuberculosis co-infection. TB-HIV co-infection deserves special attention as Co infection was seen to be associated with reduced CD4 counts, which could hasten the progression to AIDS. Screening of HIV among TB patients should be attached more importance, which would be much more helpful for treatment and outcome of both diseases.
