Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2012, Vol 18, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are among the major causes of death worldwide. Objective: To assess the prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular disease among 40- and 50-year-old inhabitants of Wroclaw.Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 40- and 50-year-old inhabitants of Wroclaw who participated in the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Program. Examination of the 40-year-old participants were conducted between 1999-2001, while among the 50-year-olds between 2002-2007. 2981 inhabitants of Wroclaw (1729 women and 1252 men) were enrolled in the study. Results: Among the 40-year-old participants, BMI ≥25 kg/m[sup]2[/sup] was found in 37.9% of the women and 65.2% of the men, while among the 50-year-olds it was found in 55.4% and 74.9%, respectively. Hypertension was observed in 15.7% of the younger and in 34.7% of the older women, while among men – in 34.6% and 54.7%, respectively. Blood glucose level ≥100 mg/dl was diagnosed in 18.3% of 40-year-old women and in 15.2% of 50-year-old women, while among the men – in 29.6% and 34.1%, respectively. Total cholesterol ≥190 mg/dl was diagnosed in 59.1% and 74.8% of the younger women and men, and in more than 80% of 50-year-old participants. Among nutritional risk factors, an excessive percentage of energy from total fat and saturated fatty acids in diets were mainly observed. Smoking habit was declared by about 30% of women and more than 35% of men from both age groups. A Relationship was observed between level of education and average of some of the assessed risk factors. Conclusions: A significant impact of gender, age and level of education was found on the prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular disease among the examined inhabitants of Wroclaw. The co-existing risk factors for cardiovascular disease observed in the study may increase the probability of cardiovascular events occurring in the study group of Wroclaw inhabitants.Key words: risk factors, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, hypertension, saturated fatty acids, dietary fiber
