Abstract
It is intended in this work briefly recover the main interventions of the state in promoting social housing in the period extending from 1937 to 1986, represented by the Institutes of Retirement and Pension - IAPS, the House Popular - FCP Foundation and the National Bank of housing - BNH, with the purpose to emphasize their potential and limits in relation to the promotion of social housing in the country. It is possible to see that by virtue of inconsistency and distortions of such interventions by the Brazilian government and given the difficulty entering in the formal real estate market the subalternized social groups and urban working classes printed the signs of their actions in the production of much of the urban space materializing in the expansion of various popular housing typologies usually marked by precarious living conditions.
