Productivity of Cyamopsistetragonoloba in Prosopis cineraria and Tecomellaundulata based agroforestry systems in Western arid region of India

Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2016, Vol 13, Issue 2

Abstract

Effect of 23-year old khejri (Prosopis cineraria) and rohida (Tecomellaundulata) trees on the grain and fodder yield of Cyamopsistetragonoloba crops under rain-fed conditions was investigated. The tree species varied (P < 0.05) in growth variables, where diameter at breast height was related (P < 0.01) to height and crown diameter by a power model for P. cineraria and a liner model for T. undulata. Production of C. tetragonoloba grain was 45 g m-2 (28%) and straw was 115 g m-2 (72%) of total yield) in sole crop plots. In tree integrated plots, trees affected soil water availability and yield of the intercrop. Competitive use of soil resources by the tree species reduced grain yield by 17 - 52% and straw yield by 4 - 29%, respectively. However, the reduction was lesser (by 15.1% in grain and by 3.0% in straw) in P. cineraria than in T. undulata plots. This indicates that P. cineraria trees are more beneficial by maintaining greater soil water availability and yield. The reduction in grain was relatively greater as compared to the straw yield which improved with increasing distance from tree trunk as was observed for soil water and crop yield. Though less than the control plot, yields in both grain and straw were highest at centre of four trees suggesting management options like reducing tree density or canopy pruning. Such management may provide intermittent benefits of fodder, fuel and minor timber and long term benefits of environment and carbon sequestration.
