Progress of diagnosis and treatment of sepsis-associated encephalopathy
Journal Title: Journal of Air Force Medical University - Year 2023, Vol 44, Issue 4
Abstract
Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response caused by the dysregulation of immune response after infection. It is the main cause of death in ICU patients worldwide. Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is often present at the acute phase of sepsis, which is associated with increased mortality. In addition, more than 50% of sepsis survivors suffer from long-term cognitive deficits, which severely impair their quality of daily life and impose a heavy burden on society. With the number of sepsis survivors increasing, more and more patients suffer from SAE. Despite the high incidence, the pathologic mechanisms of SAE at the acute or chronic stage are not fully understood, and there is currently no specific treatment for SAE. This review systematically describes the clinical and pathological process of SAE from initial clinical manifestations and long-term cognitive disordor in sepsis survivors, and summarizes its underlying mechanisms, so as to provide new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of SAE.
