Projection of the vegetation surface in the urban area of the province of Abancay in Peru, using the NDMI Index of EO Browser
Journal Title: Prohominum - Year 2024, Vol 6, Issue 3
Abstract
In this study, researchers focused on the vegetation cover within the urban area of AbancayProvince in the Apurímac region. The region is experiencing a concerning rise in deforestation. The primary goal was to predict the vegetation surface from 2025 to 2030, in order to warn of the possible future realities in the study area, favoring the improvement of planning and sustainable urban development. Data recorded between the years 2017 to 2024 were used, from the images of the Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI) from the Sentinelhub EO Browser portal. These data were processed using ArcGis 10.8 software, offering information on; i) arid or urban areas devoid of vegetation and ii) areas with vegetation cover. In the study area, surfaces corresponding to two specific classifications were evaluated. Then, a linear regression analysis was applied, obtaining a p value equal to 0.032 and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.565 in a medium range. Based on these results, possible future situations were projected. In conclusion, a decreasing trend is observed in vegetation, with an estimated decrease of 10.54% between the years 2025 and 2030
