PROJECTIONS OF THE CONCEPT OF ‘SHAME’ IN «BAI GANYO» AND «HISTORY OF THE SLAVO-BULGARIANS» (AN INTERTEXTUAL ANALYSIS)

Abstract
The article discusses the concept of «the shame of our own» as it juxtaposes its interpretation in two emblematic for the Bulgarian culture works – «History of the Slavo-Bulgarians», written by Paisii Hilendarski, the ideologist of the National Revival in Bulgaria, and «Bai Ganyo. Incredible stories about a contemporary Bulgarian» written by Aleko Konstantinov at the very end of the pre-modern literary epoch. The intertextual analysis shows that Aleko’s work enters into a subtle dialogue with Paisii’s «History…» as it undermines its ideology and ridicules its claims. Bai Ganyo is a character who best embodies Paisii’s vision of a modern Bulgarian. The total eurocentrism of Aleko's short stories, however, effects a bias narration ‘against’, which travesties the personage, turning him into an anti-hero, inducing shame in both narrators and readers. Thus the narration in «Bai Ganyo» reanimates the shame of the Bulgarianness, the following of foreign models, the self-effacement and self-denial, which Paisii rebelled against in his «History of the Slavo-Bulgarians».
