Prolonged Deprivation Among Unemployed Youth: An Empirical Study with Reference to Bihar, India

Abstract

The present enquiry was undertaken to study the prolonged deprivation among unemployed youth of Bihar state. Since long it has been observed that youth are the backbones of our society. Youth has the capacity to change the whole scenario of human spheres of life endeavor by utilizing their energies but due to uncertainty of employment, very low economic conditions and improper utilization of human resources they are not yet in good conditions. Hence, the study was planned to see the degree of deprivation with reference to Bihar state. For the present study, two hundred youth (N=200) comprising rural (n=100) and urban (n=100) were randomly selected from the districts of Bihar state, viz., Darbhanga and Madhubani. Data were collected through questionnaire schedules using Prolonged Deprivation Scale (PDS), and self-made biographical information blank. Having collected the data, the individual scores were summed up according to procedure and given appropriate statistical treatment. Obtained results indicated that rural youths are little more prone to deprivation than urban youths. Moreover, all the 15 dimensions of prolonged deprivation scale, namely, housing condition, home environment, economic sufficiency, fooding, clothing, formal educational experiences, childhood experiences, rearing experiences, parental characteristics, interaction with parents, motivational experiences, emotional experiences, religious experiences, travel and recreation, and quasi - cultural experiences have been found significant between the group of urban and rural youth belonging to Bihar state. Although in total no significant difference has been found. Finally, results have been discussed in detail by highlighting the probable reasons.
