PROPERTIES OF CUTTING TOOLS WITH CERAMIC/CERAMIC MULTILAYERS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 226, Issue 4

Abstract

Cutting tools for High Speed Machining (HSM) work under high stress and in high temperature. Additional machining processes are lead without cutting fluids that cause significant wear on the tool rake face. These high mechanical and thermal loads demand cutting tools with new kinds of coatings like ceramic/ceramic multilayers. Tested ceramic multilayers, TiAlN/TiN and TiAlN/CrN, have been deposited using cathodic arc plasma evaporation on WC-Co inserts. Commerce tools with a TiAlSiN coating and WC-Co without coating were tested for comparison with proposed new materials. TiAlN/TiN and TiAlN/CrN coatings have a hardness of 36 and 32 GPa, respectively. Low mismatch of lattice parameters especially for TiN and TiAlN can cause strengthening of the TiAlN/TiN multilayer, giving high hardness and wear resistance. Scratch tests confirm the very good multilayer coatings-substrates adhesion. Cutting test were done by the turning of quenched NC6 tool steel. Both multilayers TiAlN/TiN and TiAlN/CrN give rise of tool life over 3 and 1.4 times, respectively, in comparison with uncoated inserts. The durability of tools with multilayers is higher than commercial tool with TiAlSiN. Presented results show the high potential of multilayers as a new kind of coating for HSM of hardened steels.
