Proportion of juvenile wood and mature wood in stems of Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.) origin from forests grown in different site conditions

Abstract

Proportion of juvenile wood and mature wood in stems of Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.) origin from forests grown in different site conditions. This study presents research of 8-metres logs obtain from Norway spruce at the age of 70 years. Research were carried out on spruce growth in the northern part of Poland near the Baltic Sea (Forest District Sławno), where it was planted in an artificial way outside its natural range. The aim of the study was to confirm a difference in proportion of juvenile wood and mature wood between sites with varying degrees of fertility. The study confirmed that proportion of juvenile wood and mature wood differ between two sites fresh forest (more fertile) and fresh coniferous forest (less fertile). It was found relatively more mature wood (volume of mature wood to volume of juvenile wood) in more fertile habitat
