Prospective evaluation of point-of-care ultrasound for pre-procedure identification of landmarks versus traditional palpation for lumbar puncture
Journal Title: World Journal of Emergency Medicine - Year 2016, Vol 7, Issue 3
Abstract
BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to determine if point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) pre-procedure identification of landmarks can decrease failure rate, reduce procedural time, and decrease the number of needle redirections and reinsertions when performing a lumbar puncture (LP). METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized controlled trial comparing POCUS preprocedure identification of landmarks versus traditional palpation for LP in a cohort of patients in the emergency department and intensive care unit. RESULTS: A total of 158 patients were enrolled. No significant difference was found in time to completion, needle re-direction, or needle re-insertion when using POCUS when compared to the traditional method of palpation. CONCLUSION: Consistent with findings of previous studies, our data indicate that there was no observed benefit of using POCUS to identify pre-procedure landmarks when performing an LP.
Transition to computed radiography can emergency medicine doctors accurately predict the need of film printing to facilitate optimal patient care
BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate emergency medicine doctors' accuracy in predicting the need of film printing in a simulated setting of computed radiography and assess whether this can facilitate optimal patient...
Application of scoring systems with point-of-care ultrasonography for bedside diagnosis of appendicitis
BACKGROUND: Appendicitis is a common disease requiring surgery. Bedside ultrasound (BUS) is a core technique for emergency medicine (EM). The Alvarado score is a well-studied diagnostic tool for appendicitis. This study...
Social attitude and willingness to attend cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and perform resuscitation in the Crimea
BACKGROUND: To promote potentially life-saving bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the proportion of CPR-trained general public and their attitude toward CPR should be assessed, which is yet to be done in the...
Continuous tracheal gas insufflation during protective mechanical ventilation in juvenile piglets with acute lung injury induced by endotoxin
BACKGROUND: Low tidal volume mechanical ventilation is difficult to correct hypoxemia, and prolonged inhalation of pure oxygen can lead to oxygen poisoning. We suggest that continuous tracheal gas insuffl ation (TGI) dur...
Effects of α-methylnorepinephrine on cardiac function and myocardium at early stage of resuscitation in rabbits
BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that α2-adrenergic agonists can reduce postresuscitation myocardial injury. This study was undertaken to observe changes of hemodynamics, myocardial injury markers cTnT and cardiac m...
