Prosthetic rehabilitation with dental implants in head and neck cancer Patients: A follow-up study

Abstract
Introduction. Prosthetic rehabilitation of patients after surgery in the head and neck region is a complex process. Surgical treatment leads to defects and tissue loss while supporting treatment (radio- and chemotherapy) contributes to further complications. Aim of the study. The analysis of the late effects of dental implants in patients subjected to radiotherapy due to head and neck cancer. Materials and methods. A group of 52 patients (aged, 37-86) treated with implantoprosthetic techniques was analysed. Altogether, 114 intraosseous implants were inserted at least one year after termination of radiotherapy. On the control examinations the implant stability, bone atrophy, hygiene, condition of peri-implant soft tissues, and prosthetic restorations were assessed in a 10 year period of observation. Results. Of the 114 inserted implants in patients subjected to the analysis of late effects, 19 (16.66%) implants were lost during the observation period. The total implant survival rate was 83,33% after 10 years. Conclusions. Radiotherapy may have an adverse effect on the outcome of implantoprosthetic treatment. Prosthetic rehabilitation with use of intraosseous implants has made it possible to improve the mastication function and facial aesthetics and thus greatly contributes to a significant improvement of the patient’s quality of life after surgical removal of head and neck cancer defects.
