PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS OF PROCRASTINATION IN STUDENTS
Journal Title: International scientific journal Science and Innovation - Year 2025, Vol 4, Issue 4
Abstract
Procrastination is a widespread issue among students, negatively impacting their academic performance and psychological well-being. This paper explores the psychological factors contributing to procrastination, including perfectionism, fear of failure, lack of motivation, poor time management skills, low self-regulation, anxiety, and decision paralysis. The research of notable scholars such as Piers Steel and Joseph Ferrari highlights that procrastination is not simply a time management problem but an emotional regulation issue. Steel's Procrastination Equation explains that people procrastinate when immediate gratification outweighs future benefits. Meanwhile, Baumeister’s ego depletion theory suggests that self-control is a limited resource, and its depletion increases procrastination tendencies. The paper also provides strategies to overcome procrastination, including goal-setting, time management techniques, and habit formation. Understanding these psychological aspects can help students develop better study habits and enhance their academic success.
