Journal Title: World Science - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 11

Abstract

Cancer is one of the main causes of death in modern society after cardiovascular and brain-related diseases. The number of patients with malignant diseases is growing every year all over the world. The psychosocial, moral and ethical problems of oncology patients are complicated and difficultly solved. One of the most important principles of palliative care is to work in a multidisciplinary team, which consists not only of medical experts but also of social workers, clergymen, volunteers, as well as the relatives of the patient who play an exceptional role in the palliative team. Of course, each member of the team shall be able to render psychological and social support to the patients and their families. The tasks and actions of the nurse in the palliative care team when rendering psychosocial assistance to oncology patients are essential. This status requires a special medical and social preparation and knowledge in the field of psychology and communication. The topic about the psychosocial aspects of healthcare for oncology patients in terminal stage is broad and ambiguous. This includes different conditions and problems of patients; different clinical picture of a specific oncologic disease; different ways of reaction of the patient to the disease, difficulties in psychological and social adaptation. All these differences shall be distinguishable in every separate case. The nurse has not only a key role in the palliative care team, but the nurse could also influence the attitude of the patients to their condition; help for solving different psychosocial issues; help the patients to adapt to their changed lives, thus increasing the chances of the patients to achieve a dignified end of their lives.
