PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS’ PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF АUSTRALIA IN LEGISLATIVE DISCOURSE

Abstract

The article deals with the legislative documents concerning professional development of Australian teachers. The items of Melbourne and Adelaide Declarations on educational goals for young Australians have been highlighted. The goals of Melbourne Declaration include the following: Australian schooling promotes equity and excellence; all young Australians become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, active and informed citizens. The means of achieving the goals have been characterized. They are: developing stronger partnerships, supporting quality teaching and school leadership, strengthening early childhood education, enhancing middle years development, supporting senior years of schooling and youth transitions, promoting world-class curriculum and assessment, improving educational outcomes for Indigenous youth and disadvantaged young Australians, especially those from low socioeconomic backgrounds, strengthening accountability and transparency. In particular, supporting quality teaching and school leadership has been dwelled upon. The role of teacher professional development in improvement of school education has been defined. It has been stressed that teachers and school leaders are of great importance in helping young Australians to attain the goals. The Adelaide Declaration was the precursor of the Melbourne one. The goals of both declarations coincide but the means of achieving them are described in more detail in Melbourne declaration as well as the social and economic context of education in Australia.
