Quality of Life and Marital Adjustment of Patients with Severe Mental Illness In a Post Graduate Psychiatry Department of a Medical College in Eastern India.

Abstract
The WHO defines QOL as 'an individual's perception of their position in life in the context of the culture and value systems in which they live, and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards and concerns' (WHOQOL Group. Development of the WHOQOL: Rationale and current status. Int J Mental Health 1994). In India, spouses form the most important caregiver for the patient and therefore impact the patients' QOL. However, relatively little is known about marital adjustment, which can definitely influence QOL of patients with mental illness. (Pandey Vibha et al. (2013)) This study intended to explore QOL and marital adjustment among patients with severe mental illness namely: schizophrenia (SC), bipolar affective disorder (BPAD) and recurrent depressive disorder (RDD) to study differences, if any, between the groups. The sample was selected from the Psychiatric Ward of Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Bhubaneswar, Orissa by using Purposive sampling method. Socio demographic and clinical details, Quality of Life & Marital adjustment of patients with schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder and recurrent depressive disorder will be assessed by using Socio-demographic, clinical data sheet, The World Health Organization Quality of Life –BREF Questionnaire and Locke & Wallace Marital Adjustment Test (LWMAT) Questionnaire respectively. When categorized according to scores, the majority of the Male Patients (respondents) with SC, BPAD & RDD (67%) had average to good QOL, that is higher QOL as compared to female SC, BPAD and RDD (40%) patients having average to good QOL. Schizophrenia (SC) (80%) rated themselves as having Poor marital adjustment compared with only (31%) patients with RDD. Patients with BPAD (14.3%) rated themselves as having poor marital adjustment. (Chi-Square = 16.76 and P = 0.002) The marital adjustment of Patients is Significant at level P = 0.002
