Abstract
Background: Among the consequences of bipolar disorder there is a decreased quality of life, including the deterioration of patients’ social functioning. Material: The paper contains an analysis of 24 major publications from the years 2009 to 2014, including 17 related to the assessment of quality of life and 7 articles on the bipolar patients’ social functioning. Results: There were selected 8 factors which are related with the assessment of the quality of life of persons with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder: the presence of depressive symptoms, substance use, sleep deficit, religious activity and social support, internalized stigma, suicide attempts in the past, the perception of emotions and impulsivity. It was defined that social functioning of bipolar patients is dependent on the emotional state of patients, and in particular the presence of depressive symptoms. It is dependent also on patients’ cognitive performance and internalized stigma. Conclusions: Assistance in mastering the first symptoms of a depressive phase can help bipolar patients in their smooth social functioning and quality of life. Taking into account the implementation of appropriate therapy with cognitive exercise and which is aimed at reducing internalized stigma, may contribute to improving the quality of life and improve the patients’ social functioning.
