Quality of life of patients with cancer cachexia syndrome

Abstract

Introduction. Cancer diseases, despite the enormous advances in medicine continue to cause enormous suffering to patients and their families, and a very large number of causes lead to death. Aim. The main aim of the research was to measure the quality of life of patients with cancer cachexia syndrome. Material and methods. The research was conducted in Włoszczowski district from September to December 2010. Sixty-five patients of Włoszczowski Home Hospice participated in the research. To test the quality of life there was used the questionnaire- Quality of Life Assessment instrument (WHOQOL - BREF), developed by the World Health Organization. Conclusions. 1. Quality of life of patients emaciated by cancer is at a low level. The physical area is estimated as the lowest one. 2. Subjective quality of life of patients with cancer cachexia syndrome is individually assessed and is not depended on age, education or place of residence. 3. A disadvantageous change of the patients’ appearance is a great problem. The patients have a sense of shame, fear the lack of acceptance as well as rejection. 4. Symptoms of depression have negative influence on quality of life of patients emaciated by cancer and are associated with deterioration of functioning in physical and mental areas. 5. The estimation of quality of life and quality of medical care should be introduced into the palliative and hospice practice everyday.
