QUESTIONNAIRE OF ADOLESCENT COPING STRATEGIES USED IN SOCIAL CONFLICT SITUATIONS
Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2012, Vol 44, Issue 1
Abstract
Summary: The questionnaire of adolescent coping strategies used in social conflict situations (KSMK) is designed to examine strategies to cope in social conflict situations used by adolescents. It describes 33 situations of social conflict. Each situation is provided with four behaviors that express coping with a situation of social conflict – the first one refers to aggressive coping, the second one to avoidance coping, the third one to submissive coping, and the forth one to task-oriented coping. The results are obtained for each scale separately by adding up the behaviors marked in 33 situations belonging to a given scale. Since the scales have 33 items, the assessed can obtain from 0 to 33 points on each of them. The KSMK questionnaire has favorable psychometric properties. The reliability coefficients of the scales measured by the internal consistency method (Cronbach's alpha) range from alpha = 0.73 (for the Aggression, Submissiveness and Task scales) to alpha = 0.694 (the Avoidance scale). The validity of the scales was tested in many ways; their convergent validity was confirmed with reference to the results of Ostrowska's Attack-Resignation Questionnaire, Michelson and Wood's Children's Assertive Behavior Scale adapted by Oleś, and the Adolescent Conflict Resolution Questionnaire by Honess et al. adapted by Lachowska. Norms on the Sten scale were developed based on a sample of 1,877 students (including 975 girls and 902 boys aged 13-15) - 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders from middle schools across all the sixteen provinces in Poland.
