Recurrent water from slag and fly ash disposal ponds as a medium for carbon capture and storage
Journal Title: Technologica Acta - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 2
Abstract
Due to the increased use of fossil fuels and industrial production, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases, causing greenhouse effect and, consequently, climate change. Stationary CO2 sources like coal power plants produce the bulk of the world’s CO2 emissions. Electricity and heat plants and other fuel transformation activities account for 40% of total global CO2 emissions. Therefore, great interest in the possibilities of CCS systems to reduce CO2 emission is evident, either through removal or reduction measures. The experimental part of this paper deals with the determination of the potential of alternative media for use in CCS technologies, describing the lab-scale investigation. The role of alternative media in that context has been as-signed to recurrent water from fly ash and slag disposal pond Jezero II of Power Plant Tuzla. When choosing an alternative medium for CCS applications, the following features were considered: that the medium currently has a negative impact on the environment; that the medium is available in sufficient quantities; that the medium has a low price and that its final disposal causes costs. Hence, the ability of the selected media (recurrent water) for CO2 capture has been confirmed and its capacity in that context roughly determined.

Evaluation of low-cost sorbents as potential materials for in situ remediation of water contaminated with heavy metals
The aim of this paper was to examine the possibilities of using various low-cost sorbents as material for permeable reactive barrier for efficient removing of lead, cadmium, copper and zinc from contaminated water. Natur...
Control of heavy metal content in different types of vegetables produced in the area of Zenica
In this study, concentrations of lead Pb, cadmium Cd and arsenic As were tested in 177 samples of fresh vegetables produced in the area of Zenica. This locality is exposed to the strong influence of high emissions of var...
Methanol Extracts and Volatiles of Telekia speciosa (Schreb.) Baumg. from Bosnia and Herzegovina
The aim of the present study was to analyse the methanol extracts from the aerial and the underground parts of Telekia speciosa (Schreb.) Baumg by HPLC and determine their antioxidant capacity. In addition, volatiles fro...
Water determination in samples with high sugar and protein content
The aim of water determination should be detection of water and nothing but the water. Large number of methods use heating where the result shows loss of all volatile compounds and not only water. The result of these tec...
