Reinclusion of deciduous teeth in patients receiving orthodontic treatment

Abstract
Reinclusion is a phenomenon involving slow embedding of partially or completely erupted deciduous teeth and, less frequently, permanent teeth in the dental alveolus. The following can be distinguished: partial reinclusion when a teeth is embedded up to the mid-height of crowns of the adjacent teeth (phase A1) or deeper (phase A2) and complete reinclusion (phase B). The aetiology of this condition is not fully explained. Due to a possibility of numerous complications associated with reinclusion it is extremely important to diagnose it early and to prepare an individual management strategy depending on an infraocclusion phase and accompanying disturbances. The work aimed to assess the prevalence of reinclusion of deciduous teeth taking into account sex of studied patientsand its prevalence in individual groups of teeth. Additionally, stage, incidence and type of complications, and coexisting malocclusions, dysfunctions and parafunctions were assessed. Material and methods. Medical documentation of 1003 patients (535 girls and 468 boys) aged 6–12 years treated at the Department of Orthodontics, Warsaw Medical University, in the period 2005–2013, was analysed. Results. Reinclusion of deciduous teeth was observed in 4.2% of patients. In boys embedded teeth were observed in 52,4% of cases and in girls in 47.6%. The second deciduous molars in the mandible were embedded in 39.2% of cases, and the first in 30.4%. In 66% of patients the phase A1 of reinclusion was observed. A partial lateral cross bite was observed in 33.3% of cases, crowded teeth – in 38.1%, and 9.5% of patients with reinclusion stated that they used to bite nails. Swallowing dysfunction was observed in 7.1% of cases. In 11.9% of patients with infraocclusion of deciduous teeth ectopic location of permanent teeth and inclination of the adjacent teeth coexisted.
