REMEMBERING THE FORGETTING AS A WAY OF RECKONING WITH THE PAST (AN ORAL STUDY OF HISTORY)
Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 48
Abstract
The most important feature of the age we live in is to reconstruct social memory and to replace the culture of remembering with that of forgetting. The tradition, religion, and anti- identity attitude, which the modernity has been maintaining mainly in Europe and in, the rest of the world has finally failed. Nowadays in the globalizing world both social memory has been hurt and the identity belonging has been tried to be forgotten due to the project of nationalizing modern states. . However, through the postmodern period there has been a reckoning with the past and an effort to isolate from the past in all societies. Because these societies do not want to carry all the sins of the past that will follow them like a shade. The main goals of our article are both to evaluate this issue with a sociologic and historical perspective and to give life story and the experiences of Muhammed Esen aged 133 who witnessed the to the Armenian events in the context of the culture of remembering and forgetting during the Turkish nation building process.
