Remix as a Design Tool in Architecture and Aiatsis Building
Journal Title: LOKUM Sanat ve Tasarım Dergisi - Year 2023, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
This study focuses on the potential of the remix phenomenon to be used in the field of architectural design and discusses the sample building, AIATSIS (Australian Institute Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Studies). The building, designed by ARM Architecture, refers to Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye, which was completed in France in 1930. Architect Howard Raggatt states that they established a relationship with Villa Savoye through the criticism of modernization in this project. In this context, the designed negative twin is known in the professional media as Black Villa Savoye. The building formally repeats the facade of Villa Savoye, reflecting the aura of the original building. Within the scope of the study, the AIATSIS building is examined based on the remix classification of Eduardo Navas, through the original-successor relationship. Based on the definition of Navas, it is seen that a design method similar to selective remix and reflexive remix is used. It is clear that with the definitions or classifications to be made in the architectural design, different readings and evaluations of remix types can be put forward. At this point, it is aimed to contribute to the literature focusing on the original-copy relationship in architectural design.
