Renal transplantation as the best treatment modality for end stage renal disease

Abstract
Background: Renal transplantation has become the preferred treatment option of patient with end stage renal disease. It avoids the risk, cost and inconvenience of dialysis. The technique has been developed to reduce morbidity in living donor. Transplantation offers more freedom in patients with end stage renal disease and associated with better clinical outcome. Aim: To evaluate renal transplantation as best treatment modality for ESRD. Material and Methods: This study included 16 recipients and 16 voluntary kidney donors. All the patients presented with clinical manifestations of chronic renal failure with ESRD. Human kidneys for transplantations in this series were obtained from living volunteer donors. Results: In our study, 14 out of the 16 renal transplants performed, were successful. Two recipients died in early post-operative period. Chronic rejection was seen in 3 patients at 6 months follow up. Conclusion: Renal transplantation is the best modality of therapy for patients with end-stage-renal disease. Renal transplantation improves the quality of life in patient of ESRD than dialysis.
