Research on mathematical literacy in schools - Aim, approach and attention
Journal Title: European Journal of Science and Mathematics Education - Year 2017, Vol 5, Issue 3
Abstract
The development of mathematical literacy in schools is of significant concern at the policy level, and research is an important source of information in this process. This review article focuses on areas of research interest identified in empirical projects on mathematical literacy, and how mathematical literacy in schools is approached by research. The following three main challenges are identified: both researchers and teachers are uncertain about how to develop students’ mathematical literacy, specific attempts to work directly with mathematical literacy through mathematics alone have not been successful, and teaching for mathematical literacy appears to require non-traditional methods for teaching mathematics. More qualitative research is called for, with emphasis, for example, on classroom studies focusing on teachers’ priorities regarding mathematical literacy, best-practice examples, or interventions in which teachers and researchers work together.

Perceived teacher factors in relation to students’ achievementrelated outcomes in science classrooms in elementary school
The purpose of the current study was to investigate the roles that perceived teacher affective support (PTAS), perceived teacher mastery goal orientation (PTMGO), academic emotions, self?efficacy and behavioural engageme...
Definitions are important: the case of linear algebra
In this paper we describe an experiment in a linear algebra course. The aim of the experiment was to promote the students' understanding of the studied concepts focusing on their definitions. It seems to be a given that...
Why do chemistry students need to take mathematics courses?
Students tend to ask why they should learn mathematics lessons or courses. This study investigates the perceptions of chemistry students and their instructors about the relevance of mathematics courses to their field of...
Enhancing laos students’ understanding of nature of science in physics learning about atom for peace
This paper aimed to study of Grade 12 students’ understanding of nature of science in learning about atom for peace through science technology and society (STS) approach. Participants were 51 Grade 12 who study in Thongp...
The role physics can play in a multi-disciplinary curriculum for non-physics scientists and engineers
At many physics departments a significant fraction of teaching is in support of engineers and scientists in other majors. These service courses are thus an automatic crucible of interdisciplinary interaction, and at time...
