Research on Reinforcement Effect of Widening on Existing Bridges

Abstract
The employment of a new bridge on the widening of the existing bridge had certain reinforcement effect on the existing bridge.With the variation of transverse distribution coefficient before and after the widening of bridges as index, the reinforcement effect of the new bridge on the existing bridge after widening could be reflected.The variation of transverse distribution coefficient before and after widening was studied with cases of reinforced (pre-stressed) concrete girder bridges with a span of 5 m, 8 m, 10 m, 13 m and 16 m, and cases of pre-stressed concrete I-beam bridges with a span of 20 m, 30 m and 40 m.The results show that after bridge widening, in most cases, the transverse distribution coefficients of the main beams (slabs) are all decreased.Basically, the closer a beam is to the new bridge, the greater the decreasing margin is.The larger the bridge span is, the more obvious the reinforcement effect is on the existing bridge after widening.
