Research status of exosomes in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases

Journal Title: Journal of Air Force Medical University - Year 2023, Vol 44, Issue 8

Abstract

Exosomes (Exos) are a major subtype of extracellular vesicles. They are natural nanoparticles with a bilayer phospholipid membrane structure, and carry a variety of complex contents, including nucleotides, proteins and lipids, etc. Exos have beneficial or harmful effects on target cells by transporting a variety of bioactive molecules to recipient cells and tissues. In cardiovascular diseases ( CVD), Exos have a “ double-edged sword” effect, which can lead to apoptosis, hypertrophy and fibrosis on the one hand, and promote angiogenesis and cell proliferation on the other hand. The effects of Exos from different sources are different. This paper describes and summarizes Exos as a treatment for CVD, points out its therapeutic advantages and development bottlenecks, and discusses the next research direction.
