Resorption of tooth roots as a complication of orthodontic treatment – aetiology, symptoms and prophylaxis Literature review

Abstract
Resorption is a combination of pathological and physiological factors that lead to damage of tooth tissues as a result of the cementoclast, dentinoclast and ameloclast activity.<b> Aim</b>. The paper aimed to discuss symptoms of resorption of tooth roots associated with orthodontic treatment, predisposing factors and prophylaxis.<b> Material and methods</b>. A review of the literature was conducted with the help of the PubMed database and the following key words: risk factors, orthodontic treatment, inflammatory root resorption, OIIRR, impacted teeth. The studies were supplemented with papers published by Polish and foreign authors. 36 positions of literature regarding this field were selected and analysed. <b>Results</b>. Inflammatory root resorption is a common consequence of orthodontic movements of teeth, but it can be also observed in patients who have not received orthodontic treatment (idiopathic resorption). The intensity of resorption depends on many factors and they are still not fully known. They include systemic diseases (e.g. Paget’s disease), medications, atypical morphology of tooth roots and numerous factors associated with orthodontic treatment such as time of treatment, value of the force or range of tooth movement. Genes (TNFRSF11A, IL-1beta gene) and saliva biomarkers have been selected and they can be assayed in patients receiving orthodontic treatment who have been diagnosed with apical resorption of tooth roots. Examinations (apart from radiological scans) performed in patients suspected to have resorption of tooth roots as a complication of orthodontic treatment may help physicians make a correct decision regarding further planning of orthodontic treatment. <b>Summary</b>. The background of inflammatory resorption associated with orthodontic treatment is multifactorial. A thorough medical history and patient’s examination, combined with considered orthodontic treatment under radiological supervision will allow to reduce the risk of this complication during orthodontic treatment. <b>(Teodorczyk D, Walerzak M, Zadurska M, Tokarska P, Pietrzak-Bilińska B.
