Respiratory infection during pregnancy

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2010, Vol 23, Issue 5

Abstract

The respiratory system undergoes several adaptations during pregnancy. Tidal volume increases although the respiratory rate remains unchanged which results in an increase in minute ventilation that up to 50% higher than in nonpregnant women. The respiratory infections vary in intensity relying mainly on the age of the subjects and presence of risk factors. This is the reason that infection of the respiratory system also occur during pregnancy. Pregnancy itself is not considered a risk factor by itself, but the infections by themselves can produced changes in the female that endanger the subjects and the fetus.Rational therapy is the basis of treatment of respiratory infections, and has been discussed in various published documents. These recommendations do not differ in pregnant women.Respiratory infections encompass those of the upper and lower respiratory tract. In the case of upper respiratory infections the diagnosis can be made basing on the history and physical examination of the patient. Whereas in lower tract respiratory infections additional examinations may be needed
