Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 2
Abstract
Aim of the study: To assess oral status, treatment needs and access barriers to dental care of disabled and/or chronically ill children and adolescents in selected provinces in Poland. Material and methods: Intra-oral examination was performed in 787 disabled and chronically ill patients from four provinces: wielkopolskie, lubelskie, podlaskie, łódzkie. The findingswerehelpful in the evaluation of the following: the incidence and severity of caries, oral hygiene, periodontal treatment needs and malocclusions. Results: The incidence of caries in patients with mixed dentition amounted to 75.1%, whereas 68.3% was the rate in those with permanent dentition. Caries severity index (DMFT+dmft and DMFT) as well as Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S) in these groups were 5.3, 6.5 and 1.4, 2.0, respectively. Conclusions: The results of intra-oral examination of disabled and/or chronically ill patients revealed neglect in dental care, hence desperate needs for education, prophylaxis, treatment of dental caries and gingival diseases.
