Review of the neurological manifestations of hepatitis E infection
Journal Title: Annals of Hepatology - Year 2012, Vol 11, Issue 5
Abstract
Hepatitis E (HEV) is a common infection worldwide and is an emerging disease in developed countries. The presence of extra-hepatic manifestation of HEV infection is important to bear in mind so that the diagnosis is not missed, since HEV is not routinely tested for in acute hepatitis due to perceived rarity of this infection outside of endemic countries. This article reviews the neurological presentations of acute and chronic HEV, and discusses the viral kinetics against symptomatology, and outcomes of specific treatment. Possible mechanisms of pathogenesis are considered.

Akin criteria as a predictor of mortality in cirrhotic patients after spontaneous bacterial peritonitis
Background and aims. Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) often triggers acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). Acute kidney injury (AKI) is frequent and correlates with higher mortality in such cases. The aim of this...

Insulin resistance, hepatic steatosis and hepatitis C: A complex relationship with relevant clinical implications

Impact of creatinine values on MELD scores in male and female candidates for liver transplantation
Introduction. A systematic bias against women, resulting from the use of creatinine as a measure of renal function, has been identified in Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD)-based liver allocation. Correctio...
PTEN at the crossroad of metabolic diseases and cancer in the liver
The tumor suppressor PTEN is a phosphoinositide phosphatase regulating the PI3K/Akt signaling pathways and mutated or deleted in a variety of human cancers. Recent evidence indicates that dysregulated PTEN expression and...
