RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF CHITOSAN ACETATE BLENDS WITH VINYL POLYMERS
Journal Title: Progress on Chemistry and Application of Chitin and its Derivatives - Year 2009, Vol 0, Issue
Abstract
In the present paper the rheological properties of solutions of chitosan acetate (ChA), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), polyacrylamide (PAM) and of ChA/PVA or ChA/PAM mixtures were studied. The measurements were carried out under the change of sample properties such as degree of hydrolysis PVA, molecular weight, and under variable experimental conditions such as temperature, shear rate, and blend composition. The criterion of miscibility of solution blends, based on the additivity rule of apparent shear viscosity has been discussed. Moreover, for the all investigated samples, the mathematical interpretation of relationship between the apparent viscosity ha and shear rate g, according to the Ostwald de Waele model was established. Activation energy of viscous flow (Ea) has also been determined and discussed. The obtained results suggested that the miscibility of ChA with PVA or PAM depends on the blend composition and on the molecular weight of ChA.

WETTABILITY OF HYBRID CHITOSAN/PHOSPHOLIPID COATINGS
Solution spreading and Langmuir-Blodgett/Schaefer techniques were used for preparation of chitosan/phospholipid (DPPC) films on air plasma treated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plates. The surface wetting properties w...
CHARACTERISATION OF CHITOSAN AFTER CROSS-LINKING BY TANNIC ACID
Chitosan is widely applied in biomedical and cosmetic fields. For this reason, there is a need to modify this biopolymer to achieve new properties of chitosan-based materials. The properties of chitosan can be modified b...
BIOSORPTION/DESORPTION OF CADMIUM(II) AND ZINC (II) FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS BY ACTIVATED SLUDGE IMMOBILIZED ONTO CHITOSAN BEADS
In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of cadmium and zinc adsorption and desorption from solutions containing single metals and a mixture of metals in the ratio of 1:2 by activated sludge immobilized onto chitosa...
SENSITIVITY TO CHITOSAN ASCORBATE MICROAEROPHILIC BACTERIA ISOLATED FROM INFECTIONS OF ORAL CAVITY
The aim of the date was to determine the sensitivity to chitosan ascorbate microaerophilic bacteria isolated from pathological pockets, root canals and apical abscesses. Chitosan was obtained from Antarctic krill. The ex...
HETEROGENEOUS DEACETYLATION OF CHITIN DEGRADED WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE IN A MICROWAVE FIELD
Two-step procedure of obtaining chitosan with tailored properties has been elaborated. In the first step chitin from the shells of krill (Euphausia superba) and common shrimp (Crangon crangon [L.]) was subjected simultan...
