Role of fine needle aspiration cytology in the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 1

Abstract

Aims and Objectives: 1) To study the cytologic features of Malignant Liver lesions. 2) To emphasize the utility of guided FNAC in the diagnosis of Malignancies of Liver. Fine needle aspiration biopsy first was used only in diagnosis of malignant disease. Now the technique is routinely used in the diagnosis of benign diseases as well. The use of ultrasound to guide the needle aspiration increases the sampling accuracy for focal neoplastic disease. Fine needle percutaneous aspiration biopsy of the liver and other intra abdominal organs has been shown to be a safe and accurate method for the cytological diagnosis of cancer. Materials and Methods: The present study was done in Cytopathology section of department of pathology, in a teaching hospital, Hyderabad. The study was done for a period of one year, patients referred to the cytopathology sections for USG guided FNAC of liver, who were suspicious of malignancy are included in the study. Wet fixed smears in 95% alcohol were prepared and stained with H 8 E stain, special stains like Reticulin stain, PAS, Pap were done whenever necessary. Grading of HCC into 4 different types was done based on cell features described by Noguchi et al (1986). Finally cytologic findings were correlated with Clinical, Biochemical, Serological and Radiological findings.
