Journal Title: Polski Przegląd Otorynolaryngologiczny - Year 2015, Vol 4, Issue 1
Abstract
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a medical problem with a range of social. In the severe form of concerns 2-4% of the population of industrialized countries, in the mild form of approx. 15% of adults. The predominant symptoms are excessive daytime sleepiness, feeling exhausted, sleep disorders, nightmares, night sweats, nocturia. It is well known that untreated severe OSA leads over time to arterial hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, impaired myocardial contractility, and acute cardiac events. Knowing that OSA significantly adversely affects the mental state of the patient is much less common. In this review of the literature examines the reports of this problem. The problems of mental patient with OSA include excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia, cognitive disorders, depressive disorders, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, psychosis, neurasthenia and other neurotic disorders. About 6.4 to 57.6% of patients with a diagnosis of OSA suffer from insomnia, and the patients with the coexistence of these diseases are to have a significantly increased risk of acute cardiovascular events. The reason for this is to be an increased activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, stimulated by the so-called. excitation - arousals, leading to the fragmentation of sleep. Other mental disorders are much less common, and their frequency does not exceed 10% of the patients with obstructive sleep apnea. It should be pointed out very considerable variation data provided by individual investigators, which is the result of methodological differences, especially in the case of the criteria for the insomnia.
