Role of serotonin (5-HT)(1B) receptors in psychostimulant addiction.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2011, Vol 63, Issue 6
Abstract
Psychostimulant (cocaine, amphetamine and its derivatives) addiction is an important health problem with implications in social and economic life. Although mesocorticolimbic dopamine system plays a crucial role in the mechanism responsible for the rewarding effects of these drugs, recent data also show involvement of the brain serotonin (5-HT) system. In the present review we discuss the role of 5-HT(1B) receptors in the psychostimulant addiction on the base of the effects of 5-HT(1B) receptor ligands on the behavioral effects of the psychostimulants in experimental models (sensitization, intracranial self-stimulation, conditioned place preference, self-administration and extinction/reinstatement model) used to assess their addictive properties. Moreover, the effect of long-term treatment with psychostimulants on 5-HT(1B) receptors is also discussed.

Influence of atorvastatin on serum amyloid A-low density lipoprotein complex in hypercholesterolemic patients.
The complex of serum amyloid A(SAA) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), SAA-LDL, is considered a new and unique marker of oxidatively-modified LDL particles, which is associated with atherosclerotic conditions. This study...
Effects of catecholamines on blood pressure in the long bone marrow cavity in rats with bisphosphonate-induced osteopetrosis.
Osteopetrosis is a congenital metabolic bone disease characterized by skeletal sclerosis resulting from defective osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. The disease may, inter alia, be caused by the administration of bisph...
Antidepressant-like activity of the phenylpiperazine pyrrolidin-2-one derivatives in mice.
The present study was designed to investigate the central nervous system activity of 23 novel phenylpiperazine pyrrolidin-2-one derivatives. These compounds had marked antiarrhythmic and hypotensive activities and reveal...
Mechanisms of platelet-activating factor (PAF)-mediated responses in the lung.
Platelet-activating factor (PAF) is a potent lipid mediator that has been implicated in asthma, sepsis, acute lung injury and ischemia/reperfusion injury. Its actions in the lungs include vasoconstriction, bronchoconstri...
Effect of prenatal manganese intoxication on [(3)H]glucose uptake in the brain of rats lesioned as neonates with 6-hydroxydopamine.
In the present study we examined the effects of prenatal manganese (Mn) intoxication on [(3)H]glucose uptake in the brain of rats lesioned as neonates with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). MnCl(2) . 4H(2)O (10,000 ppm) was ad...
