“RYSOWAŁ NA MIEJSCU”. MATERIALS FROM LVIV OF THE FIRST RESEARCHES OF ZŁOTA SITE IN POLAND

Abstract

At the archive of the Department of archaeology of Ivan Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian studies of NAS of Ukraine 12 pages with images of excavated inhumation burials are preserved. Pictures were made skillfully and in details. Handwritings in Polish with brief description of discovered burials are presented at the pages with indication of date, when pictures were made – 1892, signature – ZL and postscript “Rysował na miejscu”. Characteristic form and ornamentation of ceramic ware from the burials allow to define that they belong to famous Złota archaeological culture from Eneolithic period. Sites of this culture are located on Sandomierz Upland above Vistula river. Artist and amateur of archaeology Zdislaw Lenartowycz was the discoverer of this culture. In 80-th of XIX century he began excavations in Złota, which continued during 30 years. Only a few of his notes and descriptions of burials are preserved till now. All finds from the excavations, carried out in 1892 were transferred by Z. Lenartowycz to Leon Werner, who sold them to Włodzimierz Dzieduszycki for Dzieduszycki's Museum in Lviv. It was a large collection of archaeological materials, which was studied and published in 1907 by Karol Hadaczek, professor of Lviv University. Drawings from the archive of the Department of archaeology are the original pictures of Z. Lenartowycz, made by him during the first excavations. Two of these drawings, probably, appeared in Lviv together with collection from Złota, bought for the Dzieduszycki's Museum in 1892, other 10 drawings – in 1894. So, Lviv took an important part at the studying of Złota culture, because large collection of archaeological materials, originals of the drawings and field notes from the one of the first excavations of the burial complex are located there. Also in Lviv K. Hadaczek conducted scientific studies of these materials and published results of his researches at the first time.
