S-100Beta (S-100b) Protein in Acute Hemorrhagic Stroke

Journal Title: International Journal of Medical and Health Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 4

Abstract

Background: Acute hemorrhagic stroke, a subtype of stroke is one of the leading causes of death throughout the world. Computed Tomography(CT) scan is mostly diagnostic and sensitive to hemorrhagic stroke. But till now no sensitive blood biomarkers are routinely used for diagnosis, and taking any therapeutic decisions in acute stroke management. The study has been undergone to measure the plasma S-100 in acute hemorrhagic stroke patients and to compare it with the normal healthy control. Materials and methods: Plasma samples were collected from clinically and radiologically diagnosed 30 acute hemorrhagic stroke patients from the Emergency Department, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal and from 30 normal subjects (control) .The collected samples of plasma were analyzed for S-100 protein as soon as possible by Human S-100 ELISA Kit, Model - CA90603, USA, which has been read by Microplate Reader, Model RT-2100C, Rayto(Germany) in Physiology Department. Results: Results shows that plasma S-100 level in 30 normal subjects ranges from 35.15 picogram/milliliter (pg/ml) to 160.96 pg/ml with a mean value of 67.53 pg/ml. In 30 acute hemorrhagic stroke patients, the plasma S-100 ranges from 978.76 pg/ml to 6214 pg/ml with a mean plasma S-100β level of 3443.05 pg/ml. A significant difference has been noted between the plasma S-100β in acute hemorrhagic stroke patients when compared to the normal healthy subjects. Conclusion: There is a significant increase in plasma S-100 level acute hemorrhagic stroke patients when compared to the normal subjects.
