Abstract
Nowadays, when the school education reform takes place and a new Ukrainian school is built, school library becomes an important structural part of secondary schools, and plays a significant role in the educational process and child development. V. O. Sukhomlynskyi, a famous Ukrainian teacher, considered a school library to be an important means of education which provides information support to child development. The scientist believed that a school library (any type of it such as a school library of childhood, adolescence, historical, technical ones and other types defined by V. O. Sukhomlynsky – L.B.) is a centre of spiritual life, a source of spiritual wealth of a child, and authority of a school. It is a means of education and development (spiritual, moral, civil, patriotic, intellectual, aesthetic, and active) of pupils through various forms of work (Room for thinking, clubs, holidays, reading extra-curricular literature, etc.). The main idea of the scientist’s pedagogy is that a library must unite school, family and a child around books. Vasyl Oleksandrovych proved that a library is a means of family education (a private library of a pupil, family library). He considered teacher’s library to be an important source of his self-education, thought and creativity on the one hand and an effective means for educating pupils on the other hand. The teacher suggested the following methods and approaches to the school library acquisition: cooperation between teacher and librarian; providing library service to all pupils; compliance with an educational programme and school education content; selection of educational and popular science books; individual approach to pupils, etc. Vasyl Oleksandrovych’s idea about school library as a carrier of generation sequence and eternal moral values is a predictive one.
