Sea resort settlements in the Latin American coastal region: construction, inequality and contrasts

Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2010, Vol 3, Issue 3

Abstract

Latin America is one of the regions of greater tourist projection at world-wide level, the beach destinies are positioned as very convoking destinies for both internal and foreigner tourism. The urbanization that surrounds the tourist beach activity presents a particular morphology, defned by the rationalities of the hegemonic actors. Being a region with deep social inequalities, the tourism deepens them territorially to create two defned urbanizations good: 1) the one destined to the tourist: imagined, represented, commercialized and globalized, 2) the one destined to the temporary or local worker who does not have appropriate means of production for beach tourism, he/she only counts on his/her labor force or is directly marginalized of the project of global tourist development. In this last one the tourist does not circulate but territorially expresses the Latin American reality and history. The present aims to propose a general regionalization of the tourist coasts according to their territorial construction of the settlements; and to analyze the resulting inequalities of the globalized model of capitalised tourism in each of the regions proposed, interpreting the roll of the different actors. For such aim, cases of study have been selected for each one of the regions, investigating the constrasts between the sea resorts near the beach and the settlements identifed with the social inequalities..
