Second vision and sleeping reality in the world of N. V. Gogol

Abstract

The article deals with the phenomenon of sleep that forms an inoreality in N. V. Gogol writings (on the material of the story "A Terrible Vengeance" ("Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka" cycle) and the story "The Portrait" ("Arabesques" cycle). The second vision problem in the writer's work comprehends and connects with a dreamy realness penetrating into reality (the story "A Terrible Vengeance?. It is asserted that N. V. Gogol's aesthetic problems are associated with the mystical vision of the world (the story "The Portrait?. Gogol's visions are manifested through a sleep and affirmed in the reality. The images of sleep and the images of reality often merge by the writer into a single whole. Day forms of consciousness are destroyed in a dream, because sleep is an impulse to genuine action and connects with the life, which grasps dreams. In this case, in N. V. Gogol works "to dream" means "to be". The study of the phenomenon of sleep is important and provides an opportunity to better understanding the sides of the writer's artistic consciousness, the evolution of his world outlook to the idea of religious transformation of man and the world.
