Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators: From Molecular Basis to Clinical Application

Abstract
Women's Health Initiative Study have challenged the paradigms about the treatment modalities of postmenopausal period. Further alternative therapeutic options, which should be safer than the hormon replacement therapy are being warranted to improve the health status of postmenopausal women. The selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) have recently gained greater importance as a candidate to replace the era of hormon replacement therapy. The present review summarizes, and critically evaluates the clinical applications and the underlying molecular mechanisms of SERMs.
