SELF-ESTEEM CAN BE ILLUSION?

Abstract
Core attachment security which is developed from the mother-child relationship is essential for a psychologically healthy people. Self-esteem developmentally based on attachment security is an accepted, important indicator of psychological health. Recent studies draw attention to different conceptualizations towards self-esteem. Self-compassion which is one of these approaches provides an alternative point of view towards a gently, caring and sensitive behavior to oneself, that is, constructing an understanding attitude of oneself. Therefore, this study, based upon field-research, emphasizes that self-compassion is a concept that needs to be re-evaluated and it also shows that alternative approaches to self-compassion are possible. According to this study, self-esteem and self-compassion have a positive relationship with psychological health (p<.001). This result supports the existing literature, and further, it puts more emphasis upon self-compassion than self-esteem. Also, this study reflects that, in terms of gender, males are more self-compassionate than females but have less self-esteem. Finally, this study shows that self-compassion can be used be used functionally in terms of psychological health.
