Self-treatment among students of physiotherapy at the Medical University in Lublin

Abstract

Introduction: Self-treatment is a commonly observed phenomenon, associated mainly with an increased access to pharmaceutical products and their advertising. Due to the size of this phenomenon it constitutes a considerable public health problem.Objective: The objective of the study was evaluation of the frequency and character of self-treatment among students of physiotherapy at the Medical University in Lublin.Material and method: The material for the study were replies obtained from an anonymous survey conducted among randomly selected students of physiotherapy at the Medical University in Lublin. 118 correctly completed questionnaire forms were qualified for analysis.Results: More than 40% of respondents treated themselves independently, without medical consultations, 54% admitted that they uses medicinal products without consultations. The respondents treated mainly various types of pain (97%), colds (91%), and complaints concerning the gastrointestinal system (53%). The pharmaceuticals most frequently purchased were drugs for colds (89%), vitamins (83%) and analgesics (76%). Simultaneously, as many as 25% of respondents declared that they only sometimes acquainted themselves with the leaflet included in the package, and 10% did not read the attached information.Conclusions: Self-treatment is a very common phenomenon among students. A considerable percentage of students do not read the information included in the package. The complaints most frequently treated are pain and colds, while the pharmaceuticals most often purchased are vitamins and drugs for colds.Key wordsphysical therapy, self-treatment, students
