SEMANTIC TRANSFORMATIONS OF WORDS IN ARTISTIC TEXTS
Journal Title: Записки з українського мовознавства - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 23
Abstract
An artistic text is viewed as a cognitive structure which verbally explicates information provided through a system of artistic images. The aesthetic value of the artistic discourse is determined in correlation with the language as a system of signs and their compatibility models. The interaction between various text components and their meanings provides changes in the semantic structure of the language units. The contextual meaning of a language unit is considered secondary in relation to language as a system and language as a code. The study of semantic transformations of words in the artistic text involves word analysis on the level of the syntagmatic structure of the text, as well as the level of the word’s paradigmatic relationship with lexical units of the same class, and also on the level of the semantic relation between the word and the whole text. A change in a word’s semantic structure is most often referred to as a semantic ‘increment’ (V.V. Vinogradov). In this case the nominative/denotative part of the semantic core remains intact, thus preserving the ordinary, usual meaning of the word. Due to such changes the semantic structure of the word acquires some optional semes that carry a specific stylistic load in the text. Contextual synonyms used by the author show complete neutralization of the seme structure which is replaced with a new one, thus creating a completely changed lexical meaning of the word. Various types of semantic transformations of the language units are regarded as an act of creativity, an essential component of the text as a secondary modeling system, the basis of figurative meanings, and the underlying relation between a part and the whole – the semantics of the word and the semantic structure of the text.
