SENSORY INTEGRATION: THE CONCEPT AND NEW DIRECTIONS

Abstract
Our very existence is a search for meaning. As Frankle would say it, we are always trying to give meaning to each and evey of our experiences, trying to find out “what is it all?”, and the very big “WHY?”… But before wandering on the philosophical vistas and looking for the meanig of our existence, what if we could not understand what is all around us?? In fact, we realize it or not, we are always “making meaning” and often we take this vary basic and inherent trait of us for granted. Imagine a scenario when there is thousands of information coming from the environment, and we are bombarded by it, confused, trying to find out what is what and unable to. And since we cannot understand and screen out the information, we are confused, disoriented, do not know how to respond to all these new information and the world is a strange, perhaps scary place for us. But fortunately, we are able to integrate the information, organize and process them and respond accordingly, this process in called Sensory Integration. Sensory integration is the process through which the nervous systems organizes and processes the incoming sensory information from the environment. Our sensory system work together and enable us to interact with the environment in purposeful and meaningful ways
